Vivid Morsels

In early April 2005 I was brought on board to production design a script by Neil McCay, Peter Dowty, and David Groves. The film we're creating is entitled "11", and is about parallels, fate, and the worst movie ever made. Here are my production notes and scenes from behind the scenes. -Alessandra Nicole

09/26: The Weinberg Center, Part Two

We returned to the Weinberg Center a week later to finish filming the theater premiere, this time with the stunt "Shelly". We got to crash a stunt double into a car!

This is Ryan Mulkay (Ian Gilliam). This scene he's peering over the railing of the theater's lobby and gearing himself up to confront Jim Green, the local elementary school teacher- turned- town mayor. This scene was rather impromptu, but director Neil McCay says it is one of his top ten favorite scenes shot since we began.

We got into a consistancy problem, the weekend before it was dry, and it just HAD to rain right before we set up to do the exterior shot that night.

Emory (Percy Groot) and Dave (Ron Price) wax philosophic on the stairs.

Justin: Yeah! It's rainin'!

Ned, the stunt coordinator, explains what he intends to do with the stunt car and our stunt woman.

It's lunch time!

This is our stunt lady...Karen Carbone. SPOILER!! Someone gets hit by a car!!

El Stunt Car.

Yikes!

This is the camera setup in the stunt car, and that's our stunt car driver.

Rainy rainy. Ugh.

...More to come!

Vote for Jim Green!

Here's the official campaign button for Jim Green, the modest elementary school teacher who has worked his way up to mayor and now seeks to be elected for congress.

08/19: The Weinberg Center: Part One

The Weinberg Center is a historic 1920's era theater in Fredrick, MD. We shot here over two Friday nights, about twelve hours plus apiece. The first Friday, we did all the scenes involving the lobby and the exterior of another theater that we used a week earlier for the showing of the movie "Lucifer Cicero". We did scenes involving Taylor Coffman's character, Shelly.

Right away the manager of the theater told us the Weinberg Center was haunted by a ghost named Jimmy. Jimmy was the projectionist, and he had died many years ago in the projection booth from a heart attack.

"Jimmy's a friendly ghost, don't worry, just call out and let him know you're there before entering dark spaces..." she told us.

Needless to say, there were many small group expeditions into the nether-regions of the historic theater in the wee hours to test this whole ghost thing....

The silk was hung from the balcony with care to brighten the lobby.

It takes several people to assemble the frames and attach the silks.

Here is Josh, who plays the character Alex, sporting his $7 thrift store suit.

My friend Deanna would like this shot, she loves the Drama-Tragedy masks.

This is the interior of the Weinberg Center, though we didn't use this particular one as our theater in our film.

This was Emory (Percy Groot) doing some shadowplay onstage at the Weinberg Center.

This is the hot ride Ron Price shows up to bring the stars of "Lucifer Cicero" to the movie premiere. We had it on loan from Cadillacs of Tysons Corner.

That's right, we OWN this street come midnight!

This is Steady Cam Dan, looking tired. It must be about 1am here.

Free soda!

We shot these scenes around the corner from the theater, Ron Price picking up his star actors in the cadillac to be dropped off at the red carpet. Meanwhile, the bars in Fredrick had thier last call and the drunks were coming out of the woodwork to gawk. We had to work quickly and employ our police officer extra to rid the riff raff.

Unfortunately, this is where my digital camera died and I didn't have my battery charger with me (it was back in Virginia in my car, as I had driven Neil's SUV so we could get the stunt car to the location...). So, I missed the shots where we had the back of Shelly's head bleeding all over the pavement in front of the theater after Percy accidently hits her with his car. I also missed the shots where we were fixing a horrendous blonde wig to the back of Taylor's head so the movie blood wouldn't dye her beautiful blonde hair pink. :-(
